Water Damage in Your Home? Do These 6 Things First
The difference between a minor restoration and a major one is often what you do in the first hour. Keep this short list somewhere you can find it fast.
Stay safe and stop the source
If water is near outlets, panels or appliances, shut off power to that area at the breaker before stepping in. Avoid standing water you suspect is contaminated.
Stop the source if you safely can: shut the main water valve for a supply leak, or contain the area for a roof or storm intrusion.
Document, then mitigate
Photograph and video everything before you move it. Then move what you can to a dry area, lift fabrics off wet floors, and blot or mop standing water if it is clean and safe.
Do not use a household vacuum on water, and do not wait overnight; mold can start within a day or two in the Texas heat.
Call for certified help
Professional extraction and drying within hours is what saves flooring, drywall and framing. A certified crew brings the equipment and the documentation your insurer will want.
The sooner the structure is dry, the smaller the job and the lower the cost.
